At HAPI, it is our desire to be a catalyst for change within our community and respective industries. We know real change starts from the bottom up and not the top down. No Black person should ever be turned away for a service because a professional stylist doesn’t know how to care for their hair.
Our “Black Hair Matters” workshop is designed to bring diversity and inclusion to the salon industry starting from the ground up. All classes will be led by BIPOC stylists and 10% of proceeds from each class will be donated to a local, Black owned business in Oregon.
This basic, 101-level class will equip stylists with the cultural awareness, knowledge, and skill to begin caring for Black hair. Areas of focus will include:
- Identifying & mitigating systemic racism in the industry
- History of Black hair & its implications on Black culture
- Avoiding emotional damage: appropriate language & behavior during guest consultation
- Basic principles of Black hair structure, hair care, and technical haircut demonstration
